The Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg stands at around 755 metres on a spur of the Vosges above Orschwiller, commanding the Alsace plain. First recorded in 1147, the medieval fortress was ruined after a siege in 1633 and rebuilt stone by stone between 1900 and 1908 by the architect Bodo Ebhardt. You cross the drawbridge into a complete late-medieval castle — furnished halls, an armoury, the keep and the great bastion — and climb to the ramparts for a sweeping panorama over Alsace, the Rhine valley and the Black Forest beyond.
