On the day

The Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg stands at around 755 metres on a spur of the Vosges above Orschwiller, commanding the Alsace plain. First recorded in 1147, the medieval fortress was ruined after a siege in 1633 and rebuilt stone by stone between 1900 and 1908 by the architect Bodo Ebhardt. Younger visitors cross the drawbridge into a complete late-medieval castle — furnished halls, an armoury of weapons and armour, the keep and the great bastion — and climb to the ramparts for a sweeping panorama. Note the steep approach and uneven historic surfaces, so keep younger children close on the stairs and walls.
